Front cover

I have used tomato vines to produce this typography for my front cover, I am really pleased with the outcome as it has a real original feel to it.

Meet Terrance

As I have wrote my story about an ugly tomato called Terrance, I thought it was only right to illustrate him showing his friendly face.

My story

The ugly tomato

Hi my name is Terrance the tomato, I live in a beautiful garden with my family and many other tomato varieties

My gardener is the best; we call him ‘green fingers’ he knows exactly what I like

I love to sit under the sun so I can grow and become a big boy like my parents, I also like to be in the wind so it will help me pollinate.

I don’t look like the other tomatoes . . . . . . I’m not perfect and round and I’m not rosy and red.

The perfect tomatoes bully me because of my image; they call me names like. . . . . . Genetic freak. . . . . . . .Mr Ugly. . . . . . . . .Fatty and lumpy.

They tell me that no one will ever want to buy me because im a ‘deformed piece of fruit’.

They don’t realise that I taste amazing, Green Fingers tells me that I spice up the garden and when im ready ill taste sweet and rich

I get all these qualities from seeds passed down from my mummy and daddy; Green Fingers says im a ‘living antique’ and more people should plant me

Why don’t you plant me?

Or at least taste me?

It will make me very happy and I promise I won’t disappoint you!

ISTD

For the ISTD brief I was asked to research into different areas of gardening and to produce a typographical piece of design in one specified area. After lots of research I chose heirloom gardens as my subject specialising in heirloom tomatoes. Heirloom tomatoes are organic tomatoes, the seeds are passed down through generations producing a great variety of colourful and tasty tomatoes which are more healthy than the mass produced tomatoes grown for the supermarkets.

I was thinking about my target audience and wanted to aim this at children. As it is hard enough to persuade them to eat healthy fruit and veg so I thought about how it would be very unlikely for them to eat a purple lumpy tomato which would be classed as ugly! I want to create a book to show the children that the ugly fruit can actually taste so much nicer and provide them with much more nutrition.

I aim to write a childrens story and produce it in a fun typographical way to show children that ugly food can be good to eat.

Tea

I was briefed in a mini project to create some very experimental typography with tea. After a lot of experimentation with my other two team members we came up with this succesful alphabet.

Mixed media and type

From looking closely at our eyes I started to focus on our eyelashes and the purpose they are used for. I remebered back at school being taught about how eyelashes are there to protect our eyes from dust and other things which could get in and cause damage to our eyes and vision. So I bought some false eyelashes and made some typography, I prefer it inverted as it has a greater impact because of the higher contrast.

Mixed media

One of the weekly tasks was to produce a mixed media piece, I worked from my photographs to produce this. The original photo is in the background and I layered on top with watercolour, pen and mascara for the detailing.

Eye Photographs

An eye is an obvious choice to look at when talking about vision, but from my research into the blind photographer Craig Royal, he talked about the fact that he desires to see detail. My initial response to this was to look at macro photography so I tried to capture all the detail in the eyes as I could looking at different angles.

Water reflections

These are my photographs in the style of Craig Royal, I am really pleased with the outcome as they could be used as some really good textures.

Craig Royal

Craig Royal is a blind photographer and I came across him whilst doing research. Reading about him has been very interesting leaning about the thoughts of blind people, He states " I desire to see more of the detail that surrounds me" (Royal) One of his favorite subjects to take photographs of is water and the light reflecions, he creates some really interesting and colourful textures out of this.

Photographs

From doing my research into colour blindness I decided to create some photos to show how a person with colour blindness would percieve a colourful picture. I took a pictures with colours that are affected by colour blindness and manipulated them to show how a person with impaired vision would percieve this.

Colour Pallet

We had to create a colour pallet to suit our subject. From research into colour blindness I discovered these circles of colour which are used to detect colour blindness, the tests involves circles of green surounding red circles which spell out a number, those with the visual impairment would not be able to read the number. I created my own circle of colours and spelt the word blind. The colours red and green are my colour pallet as these are the colours which are involved in colour blindness.

Textures

These are my atemps to create the patterns in the style of Alan Jaras, I used natural light and passed it through patterned glass. I had to put them in photoshop to add the colour.

Alan Jaras

As light is an aspect of vision I looked at practicioners who use light to create textures, I came across this man called Alan Jaras who refracted light through patterned glass to create these interesting and colourful patterns, I really like them as they are expressive and quirky, I will try to recreate these to put in my set of textures.

Textures

I based my next set of textures on how dirty windows effect the accuracy of our vision and obstruct it so we can't see 100%. To achieve this I used my observational skills to see the close up detail of dirty windows, I focused on the window rather than the visual appearance looking out of the window to capture the textures.

Textures

For the self initiated I had to produce a set of 50 textures to express vision, my first set of textures were based on blurred vision. To achieve these blurred motions of colour I used a very slow shutter speed on the camera and swung the camera around whilst the shutter was closing. I think they have worked really well and express blurred vision which were my intentions.

Personal Manifesto

I was briefed to produce a visual piece of any format on something that is personal about me. As I have an obsession on buying dressed I decided to base it around this area and the idea that I like money, my intention would be to stop spending money. As dresses are something which I have a passion for, I initially began with this and made a dress out of money to show how much money I waste on dresses, the photograph shrunk down looked really good and interesting along with the small text stating that ‘I must stop buying dresses’. I used the format of a postcard, but stood alone it looked lonely so I made a family of three postcards stating my opinions on money such as ‘money can’t buy you love’ and ‘I wish money did grow on trees’.

Experimental phrase

The second task was to create an experimental phrase, I spent a while on the internet to find a phrase to suit my subject, I came across 'even a blind squirrel eventually finds a nut' I thought this was an interesting and quirky phrase to use. I am really pleased with the out come, I love the organic shapes and colours within the letterforms.

Vision

My initial idea for this was how rain affects the vision of drivers and how the windows steam up. I printed the word vision out and put it in the shower to catch the water infront of the word, but the shutter speed was not fast enough and the photographs did not turn out as expected. I slowed the shutter speed down which then gave me camera shake and I got some interesting photos, I put them in photoshop and overlaped the photographs to create the word 'vision'. The outcome was not as intended, but i still got an interesting effect which I am pleased with, it gives me the impresion of double and blurred vision.

Experimental Word

The first task for the self initiated was to do experimental typography expressing our subject. My first idea was to create my word 'vision' using carrots as it has been said that they help improve your vision and keep your eyes in good condition. As I have been researching into impaired vision I decided to make my word only focused in the center and blurred on the outside to create the impression of tunnel vision.

Self Initiated

The first project of the year is the Self Initiated, I have been thinking about what subject I would like to base this on. My first idea was to explore light, I thought about all of the interesting patterns I could create with light and look at all of its functions and uses as it is a very important element in life. After a lot of thinking I realised that light was too much of a broad subject and needed to narrow it down, I then decided to use vision as my subject as without light there would be no vision.

About me!

Hello and welcome to my blog. A small introduction about me. . . .I am a Graphic Design student currently in my third and final year. In the past two years I have been introduced to photography, printmaking and Web Design, I mostly enjoyed creating a website, I really enjoyed this because of the challenge and through all the hard work I had a fully functioning Web Site at the end which I can say I am very proud of. I don't know what this year will bring, but I will keep you informed of all my projects and designs. I hope you will enjoy!
