Cateract

I have been trying to express the impairment 'cateract' through typography. I have used cling film, toilet roll and watered down milk to try and create the cloudy impression which a cateract gives. As cataracts are described as cloudy lenses I tryed to create some cloudy textures by droping milk into water and taking photographs of the patterns.

D&AD The Body Shop brief

My contemporary designs

Existing Designs

I was asked to design a contemporary range of packaging for certain bodyshop products, these were: Tea Tree, Body Butter, White Musk and Foundation. As bodyshop use organic and natural ingredients in their products I decided to change the shape of the Tea Tree and White Musk to an organic shape to give us more of a feel of the product as my new shapes were more organic. The Tea Tree bottle was intended to capture the shape of a Tea Tree leaf and the White Musk shape was to look like a bud of a lily just about to open.

I used splashes of paint and line drawings to give us the contemporary feel, also the natural splashes represent the natural background of the products. I have decided to keep the existing material of PETE plastic for the bottles as it is the best type of plastic for recycling. The brown labels will be made out of brown recycled paper, the reason for brown and not white is because it is more efficient to recycle than white paper because it doesn't contain the bleach which white paper does.

Sightsavers

I have been looking at charities for people with impaired vision and came across this charity called Sightsavers. It deals with people in developing countires, I found it very interesting because these people have problems with their vision which would be rare for us to get such as River worm and Trachoma, this is due to the poor and dirty environment they live in.

A campaign was launched for sightsavers
to raise awareness of the thousands of women in the world who go blind every year. These photographs were taken by Rankin who is a fashion photographer, I really like them, they are extremely powerful and capture the audience as intended, visit http://rankin.sightsavers.org/issues/ to see the full campaign.

Revisiting self Initiated

As I have previously been looking at different types of impaired vision I decided to create a typface for each one. The first one I have done is called Presbyopia, this is an impairment which most middle aged people get, the elasticity in the lens becomes slack and they find it difficult to focus on close up objects. As this impairment is to do with elasticity I thought of creating a typface out of elastic bands. I think it has worked well, it is very playful, original and was fun to create.

RSA stamps

The brief for the RSA project was to design a set of stamps celebrating British Fashion. My first idea was to use the scenes from Radley on my stamps using the British colours, I really like them but they are not iconic enough for the brief.

My second idea was to look at textile designers so I looked at Celia Birtwell and Cath Kidston, after lots of research I decided Celia Birtwell was the most iconic. I managed to get some of her samples, I then used watercolour to paint the patterns she designed and put it on some drawings of her items. Agian i kept to the British colours and I also used items which are iconic of British weather such as the umbrella and scarf. I really liked the designs, but through research I looked at Celia's initial designs of her patterns and she used pen drawings to show how her patterns would look on a model, she uses the same model in all of her drawings so I used that as another idea. Overall I prefer the watercolour stamps and will use these for my final stamps.

Website

I was asked to produce a website for the company, I had designed a website before but I have never uploaded it to a server before. This was quite a challenge when I didn't know what I was doing, but through alot of trial and error I eventually got there and I am really pleased with the outcome. Although this became quite a challenge for me I really enjoyed having the challenge and to see the working website was very rewarding for me. The domaine name for the website is www.doggiedigs.biz take a look.

The photographs on the website were taken by the owner of the business as she is also a photographer and all customers get a free pet portrait when they board with Doggie Digs.

Business card

This is a business card which I designed for the business. I was given all the information to put on the card which I thought was quite alot to fit on, but I tried to lay it out in the most visually pleasing way I could.

Personal work!

Over the christmas period I was asked by a family member to design an identity for their new business called Doggie Digs. This business will be run from home and is home boarding for dogs. I used the brown colours because the name of the business reminded me of mud and dogs getting very dirty, I wanted it to look fun and friendly to express the feel of the business. I used watercolour on the type to make the ink run which looked like dogs had actually digged in the words.

What does heart mean to you?

A brief from the British Heart Foundation was to take a photograph of something with red in it, the question was what does heart mean to you? I used light graffiti to make patterns of hearts and made a red rose out of a napkin. I really like the red hearts made out of light as I think the composition works well and the images are very original.
